Windows 10 virtual
It's a shame it looks a little dated, and sometimes it feels like setting up a VM takes a few steps too many. But you can't argue with the quality, especially when it will always be completely free. If you're in need of a simple solution and you'd rather not tinker with additional software, there is of course Hyper-V, which is built into Windows 10 and Windows Or it is if you're using the Pro version or Windows Server. That's probably the biggest negative, in that it's hidden sort of behind a paywall.
But while Hyper-V is fairly basic, it's user-friendly, and assuming you're not looking for advanced features like GPU acceleration, it's a perfectly good tool to use. Guest OS support extends to Windows, Windows Server, and Linux, and while you might run into some compatibility issues with some Linux distros, on the whole you can expect to have a good experience. Even though there are some limitations in the free version, none of the core functionality is hidden behind a paywall, and ultimately, if you end up needing more you have the upgrade option available.
VirtualBox isn't quite as good on the whole, but for most people will be just right, and Oracle's continued support, as well as the open-source nature of the product, is admirable. It could certainly use a lick of paint, though.
Memory is shared between a Hyper-V host and the virtual machine running on the host. The number of virtual machines that can run on a single host is in part dependent on available memory.
A virtual machine can also be configured to use Dynamic Memory. When enabled, dynamic memory reclaims unused memory from the running virtual machine. This allows more virtual machines to run on the host. On the Configure Networking wizard, select a virtual switch for the virtual machine and click Next. For more information, see Create a Virtual Switch. Give the virtual hard drive a name, select a location or keep the default, and finally specify a size.
Click Next when ready. In the search box, type Turn Windows features on or off and click the top result. That opens the Control Panel dialog box shown here. Scroll down to the Hyper-V entry and click to enable the full feature set. Close the Windows Features dialog box and restart your PC. You're now ready to open the Hyper-V management console and begin creating your first virtual machine. For details on how to do that, see "Windows 10 tip: Quickly create a virtual machine to test new features.

Important The two switch approach does not support External vSwitch over wireless card and should be used for testing purposes only. Hyper-V specifically provides hardware virtualization.
That means each virtual machine runs on virtual hardware. Hyper-V lets you create virtual hard drives, virtual switches, and a number of other virtual devices all of which can be added to virtual machines. Experiment with other operating systems.
Hyper-V makes it very easy to create and remove different operating systems. Test software on multiple operating systems using multiple virtual machines.
